School news 28th January 2011

Gairloch High School Dance The Dance will now take place on Friday 11th February.

Organising the Christmas Dance each year is a complicated affair involving many different people.  Apart from the great disappointment of postponement before the holiday it becomes quite a task to bring all the parties together again for another evening at relatively short notice.  Thank you to the staff in the school, the local garage – Murdo and the drivers, the musicians and Lyn MacKenzie at the Community Hall for their support and flexibility in agreeing a new date.

Existing tickets will still be valid and if any other pupil now wishes to attend then they can purchase a ticket (£4) from the office.  This date is immediately after the S5/S6 prelim exams end and prior to the February break.

S5/6 Prelims – Pupils in S5/6 have been working with their teachers preparing and planning for their exams, which start at the end of this month.  The school website has a range of resources to help pupils make the best use of their study time.  We would ask that parents support pupils in preparation for these important exams.

Study Club – To further support S4, S5 & S6 pupils for exams teachers run extra study classes between 3.30pm and 5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for three weeks before each set of prelims.  We also provide three days of tuition on the first Monday of the Easter Holiday.   All three year groups are encouraged to attend these sessions to hone their skills and get focused help on subject issues.

Mountain Rescue Team & Coastguard visit Gairloch High SchoolThe visit was organised this year by Miss Dean and supported by Mrs. Johnston and Mr. Sutherland.  Headteacher John Port expressed his grateful thanks to Eoghain MacLean and his colleagues in the Torridon MRT and the Coastguard pilots for giving our pupils such a valuable experience of this important service.  Click here to read more and see photographs of the event.

Highland Music Festival Ella McDonagh, Alasdair Paul, Becky Griggs, Oscar Howard and Ainslie Mackenzie, as members of the Regional groups, took part in more rehearsals last weekend.  The event took place at Millburn Academy in Inverness throughout the weekend.

S2 options for S3/4 – S2 will have had a talk on their options for courses starting in May and will have a course list to complete. This will allow a start to be made on producing an option form. As explained in the letter sent home to S2 parents recently, this is the first stage in a long process and parental input is welcomed. If any parent has any query regarding this, please contact the school and ask to speak to Mr Hulme.

S4 options for S5 – S4 have been issued with a list of subjects which the school hopes to offer next year to allow the process of building the timetable to begin.  While the emphasis is on working towards the exams in May, a little time needs to be given to this task. Pupils have been asked to consult with their parents about this and should have returned the forms by the time this is read. If any parent has any query regarding this, please contact the school and ask to speak to Mr Hulme.

Chess – The Chess Competition finally concluded last week after much interruption due to the weather.  The winner was William Smith with Neil MacIver runner-up. The competition allowed pupils to help win points for their houses for participation as well as success in the competition.  The overall winners were Tollaidh followed by Maree then Kerry.  Well done to everyone who took part in this event and thanks to Mrs. Whall for supervising.
